  • English and Arts Collaboration

Ms. Richards' English 12 students have spent the last month becoming experts on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and the Medieval Era. Working collaboratively,  groups filmed a video or created a storyboard to retell one of these renowned tales. Ms. Fusco played a special role in the project this year, creating a compendium of medieval music to present to the classes. Students listened to both church and 'street' style music originating from the Middle Ages, and were provided access to songs, samples, and information about music of Chaucer's time through an extensive GatorNet topics page. The Arts have come alive through this project!

  • Participating in Theology Reduces Stress and Builds Self-Awareness

Saint Gertrude requires four years of theology, giving students a strong foundation in Catholic church history, world religions, and spiritual values. The lessons students learn in Theology class are visible in a variety of ways in our community. For example, students apply the ideals of Catholic social teachings when they rise to meet the needs of the local Richmond community. In addition, SGHS students are adept at identifying allusions in literature, noting how authors use Biblical references to reinforce motifs. Another way Theology teachers encourage spiritual reflection and growth is through daily prayer and meditation. Increased scientific and medical studies on the effect of meditation on the brain have shown the myriad of benefits. Meditation has been shown to be an effective method of offsetting the stress and anxiety of modern life and as a means of improving one’s overall health. The biblical verse,“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” from 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reinforces the importance of wellness. Students at SGHS have a multitude of opportunities to be well in mind and spirit, thanks to an environment that reinforces the importance of wellness.

  • Saint Gertrude offers Yoga for Students to Earn Personal Fitness Units

Two years ago, Ms. Brannau, Health and PE teacher at SGHS, applied for a Beyond the Classroom Grant through the PTSO to become a certified yoga instructor. After intense training and financial support from the PTSO, Ms. Brannau earned her certification and began offering yoga classes to students in the 2016-17 school year. Students signed up for the classes in great numbers, resulting in three 9 week sections of yoga offered this school year. Students in yoga class earn a PFU while learning yoga postures that relieve stress and anxiety, promote a healthy outlet, and build muscle strength. Many students in Ms. Brannau’s classes report continuing their yoga practice outside of school hours, developing lifelong health and wellness habits.
