News about Saint Gertrude High School

The freshmen (Class of 2020) voted on their colors and they are Black and Gold.

Honors Ensemble sang the National Anthem Friday, September 9 at Richmond International Raceway for the first race of the fall NASCAR season, the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 NASCAR XFINITY series race. It was broadcasted nationally. The Ensemble was wonderful.

Students visited VMFA’s special exhibition, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic the first week in September to interact with his paintings and sculptures. They explored the relationship between the art and the viewer through a series of thoughtful questions created by Mrs. Rasich, Academic Technologist at SGHS and a docent at VMFA. Mrs. Rasich created a teacher’s guide that posed questions connecting the artwork to the school’s annual theme of Relate and the all-school-read, Enchanted Air by Margarita Engle.

The experience set the tone for students in how to use the artwork at VMFA as a springboard to deep dives in learning and critical thinking. Kehinde Wiley’s artwork asks the viewer to consider how we relate to culture, history, personal backgrounds, and one another. Several other faculty are using the exhibition with their classes including Mrs. Hoen, art teacher and Mrs. Rives, Chair of the Social Studies department. Mrs. Hoen’s students created a backdrop similar to those in the exhibition allowing students to pose in front of it, mimicking the posture and stance of Mr. Wiley’s subjects. The backdrop was utilized by Richmond’s education community when it is featured at the VMFA’s 2016 Teacher Open House: Inspired by Kehinde Wiley.
