Participating in Theology Reduces Stress and Builds Self-Awareness
Saint Gertrude requires four years of theology, giving students a strong foundation in Catholic church history, world religions, and spiritual values. The lessons students learn in Theology class are visible in a variety of ways in our community. For example, students apply the ideals of Catholic social teachings when they rise to meet the needs of the local Richmond community. In addition, SGHS students are adept at identifying allusions in literature, noting how authors use Biblical references to reinforce motifs. Another way Theology teachers encourage spiritual reflection and growth is through daily prayer and meditation. Increased scientific and medical studies on the effect of meditation on the brain have shown the myriad of benefits. Meditation has been shown to be an effective method of offsetting the stress and anxiety of modern life and as a means of improving one’s overall health. The biblical verse,“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” from 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reinforces the importance of wellness. Students at SGHS have a multitude of opportunities to be well in mind and spirit, thanks to an environment that reinforces the importance of wellness.
