An in-depth, highly individualized college counseling process guides Saint Gertrude High School students to select colleges that are a good fit. Throughout all four years, students are academically prepared to attend highly selective colleges and universities, choosing university settings that include large state universities, small liberal arts colleges, art and performance colleges, and US service academies.

Technology is an integral part of the college counseling process through the web-based program Naviance. This program has many features designed to assist students, parents, and the college counselor throughout the process. Students use Naviance Family Connection beginning in freshmen year to record their extra-curricular activities, compiling a comprehensive resume. Personality assessments and career/interest surveys completed during the sophomore year build a roadmap to future studies. Small group and individual meetings help juniors create a list of possible schools of interest. The college counselor meets with each senior and her parents during the fall of senior year to collaborate on a personal plan for navigating the college process.

There are a variety of opportunities for students and their families to learn more about details relating to the college process. For example, students learn about specific colleges when college admission officers visit Saint Gertrude High School and when attending a college panel hosted by Benedictine College Preparatory School. Saint Gertrude hosts a financial aid workshop, and a college information evening for parents. The Richmond Area Independent Schools alliance hosts a college fair in spring.
