Music at Saint Gertrude High School

Students in each music class develop skills in the artistic processes of creating, performing, responding and connecting to others through music. Music benefits every student, and classes are offered at all skill levels from beginning to advanced. Students broaden their musical abilities through study of standard choral repertoire, contemporary popular music, a cappella music, Catholic liturgical music, world music, and handbell music. Frequent performances enable students to hone their skills, gain confidence, convey ideas and emotions, and experience the power of music to unite people. There are two major concerts each year, and many smaller performances. The select Honors Ensemble also sings in the Richmond community and beyond. The whole school participates each spring in a unique and creative tradition called Song Contest. In Music Technology class, students explore musical ideas and create original songs using computer-based digital audio workstations.

Music trains the brain to concentrate, to think abstractly and analytically, and to interpret complexity. Music teaches that persistence paves the way to success and that multiple solutions can be equally expressive. Music reduces stress and creates a bond with other musicians. Music has far-reaching benefits that will help students achieve in any area and provide a life-long advantage.
